A love of nomadic Berber, Arab-Islamic and European influences steered the style for this Victorian kitchen. In a Q&A format, Vanessa Walker talks to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.

Brief
- Create a kitchen that shows Moroccan influences in colour and pattern.
- Increase the storage and bench area in the kitchen. I incorporated a pull-out pantry to the left of the stove for everyday items and a butler’s pantry was refitted at the rear of the kitchen.
- The fridge needed replacing so I installed a Fisher & Paykel French-door model, then increased the depth of the bench area beside it so the fridge front sat flush with the depth of the bench.
- I reused the existing stove/oven and range hood, which I incorporated into the design.
Starting point
- The client had been to Morocco and had fallen in love with the tiles and colours she had seen there. Hence the tile selection I used, which was sourced from Perini Tiles in Melbourne, Victoria. Most of the decorating decisions flowed from the tile selection.
Key design aspects
Colour palette:
- Dulux Natural White on the ceiling.
- Dulux Lexicon quarter strength on the walls.
- The Cabinets are solid stained walnut timber. We chose them to work in with the colours in the tiles and to match with the existing timber doors and architraves throughout the house.
Materials palette:
- Caesarstone benchtops in Snow.
- Copper pendant lights from About Space Lighting.
- Fisher & Paykel French-door fridge.
- Vintec wine fridge.
- Tiles from Perini Tiles.
- Existing stove, oven and range hood.
What challenges did you work around?
The challenge was to ensure that the kitchen blended in with the rest of the house in terms of colour, which it certainly did.
